Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage - The History

The true origins of Indian Head Massage lie in the ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda. It was developed by holy men (Rishis) from the Himalayan region of India around 1800BC. These holy men promoted living a holistic way of life using meditation, diet, exercise and massage, using herbal oils and hereby creating a harmony within ones whole self.

Massage, having been part of daily life in India for thousands of years, is an acknowledged method of cleansing and maintaining the health of the body and is understood to be beneficial in achieving joy and inspiration. To this day, the tradition of Indian Head Massage is still carried out in modern India. More than any other part of the body, the head represents who we are, being the centre of our nervous system and home to our identity and intelligence. Head massage is an invaluable treatment and helps to relieve stress related problems such as: neck and shoulder stiffness, eyestrain and headaches. A thin layer of muscle covers the skull, which can tighten when we are feeling tense. Indian Head Massage can help relieve this tension, which in turn may alleviate anxiety and relax the whole body. Poor diet, everyday stress, lack of fresh air and exorcise can all lead to problems surrounding he head, neck and shoulders and Indian Head Massage is a gentle yet effective therapy, often bringing immediate relief.

What happens during a treatment?

Indian Head Massage traditionally takes place in a seated position. The practitioner will ensure you are comfortable and offer any cushions to support your back and feet. You are asked to remove any straps or clothing and to put a blanket around you so that the practitioner can access the top area of your back. The practitioner stands behind you for the duration of the treatment. First the upper back and shoulders is gently massaged using a variety of different moves and techniques. You can choose if you would like oils applied or not. The areas of you neck are then massaged before the practitioner moves to the head. You can choose to have oils on your back, neck and shoulders only and not in your hair. The treatment is hugely relaxing and is great for a quick de-stress and reset.
